Welcome to SVMS. We are a diverse, authentic Montessori educational community that is built on the principles of: intrinsic motivation, self-directed learning and social responsibility. We strive to develop each student's full potential: physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually.

About SVMS

SVMS is a non-profit, private Montessori School licensed by the state of North Carolina and is located in Black Mountain. SVMS focuses on the Montessori approach to child-centered learning by creating an environment where children feel secure, supported, and stimulated. We believe in the child: in each dream, in each mind and in each individual, through nurturing confidence, self-motivation and cooperation we promote community awareness and enthusiasm for life-long learning. We wish to help children become individuals who respect themselves, other beings and the world in which they live.

I highly recommend SVMS! We love the Montessori method of teaching. Two of our children have attended SVMS, and both have been better off for it.

“Our family so loves Swannanoa Valley Montessori School! We are so impressed with the loving care shown by all the teachers and staff at SVMS in helping our little ones grow mentally, socially and emotionally. Our kids love working, playing and growing at SVMS and we are so thankful to have such a wonderful school as part of our ‘family team.’”—Angela H, parent of a preschooler and Kindergartener

“We chose SVMS due to the size of the school and warmth in the classrooms. The staff is extremely accommodating to families as individuals. The Montessori philosophy is brilliant and inspiring. When we drop our daughter at school, it feels like we have left her with family. We have also made lifelong friendships with other parents. It is a nonjudgmental experience that fosters community.”—Emily C, parent of a Kindergartener

“I could say that SVMS has been wonderful for our family, but I feel like it’s more accurate to say it’s been a lifesaver. I have two special needs kiddos who I can now happily say LOVE school. The teachers and staff at SVMS are flexible and accommodating and know how to teach to all types of learners. I know that many other parents of neuro-divergent children feel the same way!”—Rachel S, parent of Kindergartener and third grader
