New for the 2014-2015 school year, SVMS has partnered with Asheville TAASC to incorporate outdoor leadership skills and community service into the Elementary curriculum. There will be a team building trip at the beginning of the year led by TAASC as well as 2 additional trips throughout the year. Leading up to each trip will be a series of 6 skill clinics that will prepare the students for their adventure. The first trip in January will be a caving adventure with the second trip in the spring being a¬†rock climbing adventure. SVMS Elementary teachers will be guiding students in the classroom to learn about the ecology of the places they will be visiting, including the animals and the flora and fauna. These amazing adventure trips will ultimately pull together everything that the students¬†have been learning in classroom and in the skill clinics. Beth Hockman, co-owner of Asheville TAASC, says, “We are especially excited about our partnership with SVMS because in other schools we are simply an after-school program. This will be out first adventure where what we are doing outdoors has been tied directly to what the students are learning in the class. They will be getting the full experience and I am excited to see how it all unfolds.”
