- LuAnn Wilks - Head of School
I have been in education for the past thirty years, from preschool through the college level. I believe strongly in the power of Montessori education and the belief that all children have the innate desire to learn.My background is in Special Education and Early Childhood Education. I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Ed, and an AMS 3-6 Certification. I have also completed N.C. Administration III Certification and am currently enrolled in Montessori Leadership training.
I live in Black Mountain with my husband, three Labradors and one cat. I have two grown children and two grandchildren. My husband and I enjoy the mountains of North Carolina and the many outdoor activities available.
- Melanie Accino Young - Lead Teacher - Children’s House (3-6 year olds)
I was first introduced to Montessori in 1992 when I was studying Early Childhood Education in Vermont. I quickly realized that the Montessori approach to education was the way I wanted to teach. I began working at East Providence Montessori that year and took my training the following year. I attended New England Montessori Teacher Education Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I received my AMS credentials in 1995.This is my fourteenth year teaching in a Montessori School and my seventh year at SVMS. I enjoy teaching Montessori now as much as I did right after my training.
I live in Black Mountain with my husband and two children Noah, age 13 and Eli, age 9. I enjoy gardening, hiking and jewelry making.
- Kristy Beaver - Lead Teacher - Children's House (3-6 year olds)
I have been involved in education for several years as a Reading Specialist at the elementary level and as a preschool teacher. I hold a teaching certificate in elementary education and certification as a Reading specialist. I have AMS 3 – 6 Montessori certification.I live in Black Mountain with my husband and two daughters. We have a variety of animals who share our life. We enjoy camping, biking and hanging out together as a family. I feel blessed to have found such a wonderful school.
- Ruth Duckworth - Lead Teacher - Children's House (3-6 year olds)
I first fell in love with Montessori while in college. I began teaching in a Montessori school over twenty-five years ago. I hold an AMI Montessori 3 – 6 certification. I have studied art in Paris, living in France for 2 1/2 years. I have taught French to children of all ages for over 15 years. My teaching credentials include grades 1-8 and 6-12. In my free time, I like to weave, spin, sew, paint and hike. I live with my husband Mike, and we have one child in college and one in high school. - Lucy MacGregor -Lead Teacher-Children's House (3 - 6 year olds)
I grew up with a Montessori teacher for a mom, and attended Montessori school. Relocated from Northern Ireland at age 13, I love exploring cultures and diversity. I hold a BA in sociology and have worked in experiential education with children for 10 years. I have previously taught in a Montessori preschool for two years, worked as a rock climbing guide in Alaska, as well as with North Carolina Outward Bound. I am certified in children’s yoga and taught at SVMS for three years as an Assistant Teacher. I completed my Montessori 3-6 training in June 2011. My husband and I live in the Swannanoa area, and our two children are SVMS students. - Jennifer Hermance - Lead Lower Elementary Teacher
I was introduced to Montessori education when my children began attending Montessori school at age 3. My children are now in the Elementary program at SVMS. I hold a B.A. degree in Elementary Education and AMS Elementary Montessori Certification. I have been an Elementary Montessori guide for six years, the past two at SVMS.I live in Black Mountain with my two children where we enjoy the outdoors–fishing, canoeing, camping, and music.
- Kara McNerney - Lead Upper Elementary Teacher
I have been involved in education for the past 12 years. I’ve worked with preschool age through elementary with an emphasis on outdoor education. My degree is a B.S. in Wildlife Management and relates well to the strong science base in the Elementary curriculum. I have my Montessori certification in Upper Elementary.I live with my husband and two children (both SVMS Elementary students) in Black Mountain, where we enjoy biking and are avid hikers.
- Carol Craig - Director of Administration
My first experience with Montessori was when our oldest child started attending SVMS in 2003, its inaugural year. My husband and I immediately fell in love with the Montessori philosophy and curriculum, and we are been involved ever since. Our oldest child “graduated” SVMS after 8 years, and our two younger children are in the Elementary program at SVMS.My background is in science education. I have a B. S. in Biology, and a M.A. in Biology Education. For five years, I taught science at a local high school, and now I immensely enjoy being a part of the SVMS community.
My family and I live in Asheville, with our two dogs, and we love hiking, camping, and biking. I also have fun playing Irish Fiddle.
- Corrie Greene - Art and French Teacher
Corrie Greene is the mother of 5 children with 3 attending SVMS. Corrie teaches art and French to our lower and upper elementary students in the afternoons. Corrie works closely with the teachers to integrate art into the curriculum. Corrie is completing her degree in English Literature at Montreat College. - Sonia Brooks - Music Teacher
Ms. Sonia has been teaching music to young children since 1994. Using guitar, hand shakers, and an assortment of other instruments, she uses an interactive rhythm training with the students. Ms. Sonia sings traditional folk music, as well as original folk songs. The elementary students further their musical studies with native drumming.
- Jessica Guyer - Assistant Teacher - Children's House (3-6 year olds)
I moved to Asheville in 2009 to attend UNC-A after attending Early College High School in my hometown of Hickory. I earned by Bachelor’s Degree from UNC-A in 2011. I have lots of experience working with young children and thoroughly enjoy it. I also enjoy doing mission work both inside and outside of the US with orphans and kids in need. - Cheyenne Reeves - Assistant Teacher - Afternoon
I moved to Asheville from Virginia in 2010 to attend school at AB Tech. I live in Black Mountain with my grandmother, a long time resident of Black Mountain. I have always enjoyed working with children. While in high school I worked for YMCA teaching swim lessons. My future goals are to attend UNC-A and study Art Education. I hope to teach Elementary Art after graduating. I enjoy making pottery, painting and hiking. - Gretchen Eastridge - Assistant Teacher - Children's House (3-6 year olds)
Before moving to Black Mountain in 2003, I was involved with a co-op nursery school for four years. Previously, I worked in the Hillsboro, Ohio school district for twelve years–four years in the Special Education department and eight years as the junior high school secretary. I feel very fortunate to be part of SVMS family.I live in Black Mountain with my husband Bud. We have two children and four grandchildren (two attend SVMS). We love the mountains, gardening, hiking with our dog and being with our family.
- Katie Hanning - Bookkeeper
I joined the SVMS staff in 2009, doing bookkeeping. Since the school’s conception, I became impressed with the community of families that gathered around the school, and with the development of their children as they attended SVMS. It was a natural choice for us to send my children to SVMS. I have 3 daughters–the oldest attended 3 years at the Children’s House, my middle daughter is currently enrolled there, and the youngest is eager to have her turn soon.My education is in botany and my background includes wilderness therapy, special education support, and bookkeeping. It is a joy to be a part of SVMS as both a parent and a staff member.
